The other day, I needed to grab laundry detergent at the grocery store. Easy, right?
Not. At. All.
I stood frozen to the dirty white linoleum, asking myself,
“Do I want a stain eliminator or a brightener?”
“Do I need a fabric softener or static eliminator?”
“Do I want my sweaters to smell like fresh linen, lavender fields, or pineapples?”
Overwhelmed, I left the store with a bag of kettle fried vinegar chips and no soap. I later checked, there are 9,000 different laundry detergents. No wonder it overwhelmed me!
Too many choices can lead to decision overload, which can lead to poor decisions, which brings us to the “C” of the ABCs of change.
“C” stands for Choose.
By now, you should have 15-30 new perspectives on the current negative thinking you want to change. Today, choose 1-2 reframes that resonate with you.
It is critical that you only 1-2 reframes. Choosing too many new perspectives will dilute your thoughts, making focus difficult and change unlikely.
To replace my “Flying equals danger or death,” mindset, I choose the following two reframes:
1. Flying allows me to show my daughters how a strong woman conquers challenges.
2. Flying allows me to achieve my dream of becoming a nationally recognized speaker safely.
Exercise: Choose 1-2 reframes. Write your own reframe into an easy to memorize sentence.
