While facing challenges, shift your perspective to change your perception.
Imagine that a violent tornado plowed through a small Midwestern town, destroying two homes. The homeowners are interviewed, and the first man, his eyes brimming with tears, says, “We’ve lost everything, no way can I recover from this.”
The second man chokes back tears of relief and says, “My entire family survived, even my dog thirteen-year-old wiener dog survived! I am going to rebuild and make my life even better than before.”

Your personal power is either hindered or helped by how you interpret a situation or event.
Here is a helpful metaphor. Picture a sky-blue trailer being pulled by a fire-red pickup and a series of streets with street signs naming each one. The truck symbolizes your thoughts; the trailer following the pickup symbolizes your emotions, and roads represent the paths you steer your thoughts onto.
Now, imagine this scenario:
Weeks of successful dieting resulted in you losing seven pounds. GO YOU!
Despite this, one day, you go on an eating frenzy and stuff yourself with deep-dish pizza, movie popcorn, red licorice, and malted milk balls.
Drugged into a hyperglycemic haze, you crawl into bed and steer your thoughts down the street called “I am a greedy pig.” and trailer of negative emotions follows. You feel disappointed and angry with yourself. These thoughts are unhelpful, so you change direction and steer your thoughts onto the street named ‘New Beginning.’ Now you feel encouraged and hopeful about the next day.
So, next time you become crazy frustrated over a flat tire or fiery angered by your teenager’s nasty tone, remember, you are in the driver’s seat. You can shift directions and change your interpretation.
