Last week a friend of mine took her Mom to the ER. After the exam and while waiting for lab results, she overheard some nursing staff laughing about her mom’s very personal and embarrassing health problem. My friend felt hurt by the unkind comments she heard.
Recently, Steve waited at our car dealership while our car oil was being changed. It appalled him to witness the sales manager openly berate one of his sales guys. We’ve been very loyal to this dealership and have recommended this business to many people. After hearing about this interaction, we may not remain loyal because we don’t want to support such nasty behavior.
Today we had lunch at a local restaurant. We returned because the food is good, but we also like the staff. There’s one young man who is especially lovely. He wasn’t our server today, but it was still such a pleasure overhearing his gentle kindness towards the guests he was serving.
Clients are listening. They hear how you speak with them, and they also hear to how you talk about them. Clients pay attention to the way you treat them, they also pay attention to how you treat your employees, coworkers, and other clients.
It is important to realize that you represent the restaurant, hospital, or business you serve.
But it is much more important to realize that every day, in every interaction, you show the world who YOU are.
In this world, you represent YOU.
Who you are in this world matters.
