Corona Virus Fear? Remember your Ancestors
In 1867, my great-great-grandfather (7) left Norway with his family to immigrate to America. They crammed into a ship filled with other hopefuls chasing the dream for a better life.
Each family packed their own supply of food and water for the four-week voyage. Four weeks turned into six weeks when headwinds blew them off course. Their cramped, miserable conditions became deadly as food and water ran out. Many people, especially the elderly and young, died on board and their corpses were slipped into the sea.
In 1925, my grandfather (18) landed in America with only a few dollars in his pocket. Grandpa John didn’t speak or understand English. Instead, a note pinned to his jacket stated his name and directions to his relatives in Wisconsin.
My life in the United States is possible because my ancestors braved uncertainty, danger, and death.
Maybe your ancestors, like mine, came by choice.
Perhaps your ascendents, were forced into slave ships and experienced the inhumane horrors of enslavement.
Your ancestors might be indigenous to America, proud and brave people, slaughtered and starved by newcomers who stole their land.
Whatever your history, your ancestors experienced wars, starvation, poverty, DISEASE, and other unbelievable hardships to create the foundation of your life in the United States.
This coronavirus is hard. We are uncertain how long it will last or how affected our individual lives will be.
But when you feel afraid. Remember your ancestors.
Their DNA is part of your DNA. Their resilient, courageous blood pumps through your veins today.
We come from tenacious people.
We will get through this pandemic, together.
