While living in Norway (years ago), my ex-husband and I started a photo calendar business that became very successful. To outsiders, it looked as though we ran a flawless operation. Truthfully, we made one blunder after another.
Our problems started the very first day when we realized that we had NO IDEA how to run our brand new color copier. It took days for tutor time with a technician.
Incorrectly cutting holes for the spiral destroyed our first calendars.
Mistakenly printing the calendar side upside-down wrecked other calendars.
The copy paper was too lightweight, causing our calendars to roll up.
Insufficient postage resulted in our first calendars being returned to us.
Offering a “double your money-back guarantee” was a big mistake for obvious scamming reasons.
We continued to make mistakes as our business grew.
Our biggest shipment of 400 photo calendars went to a small island off the coast of Norway. Every single calendar was wrong, with December from the previous year. They returned the order; We changed the December and reshipped the order.
We made lots of embarrassing gaffes throughout our years in business. Each misstep forced us to re-evaluate our system and shift direction to move ahead.
Success stories rarely detail the screw-ups. This missing link makes it appear that successful people effortlessly floated to the top of the mountain. In reality, successful paths are paved with trip-ups and missteps.
We develop in the process, not in the planning.
Mistakes aren’t the opposite of success; mistakes are an essential part of success.
Success isn’t the absence of blunders; it is the navigation of them.
