Whenever you interact with someone, you leave a part of yourself in their story.
Last weekend, we went to a small family wedding. There were about 40 guests, and over the course of the weekend, I got to meet and talk with many wonderful people.
I swapped Norway stories with a woman who had lived there too and chatted with a man renovating a 100-year-old home; been there, done that. It was fun to trade sourdough tips with another guest and talk with a guy who’d started his own business. It was a weekend full of nice,,interesting people, each with their own histories and stories.
During the long drive home, I thought about those conversations and remembered a saying I learned years ago.
“Every connection you make leaves your fingerprint on their story”
Your fingerprint is uniquely your own. Before you were born, the friction ridges on your fingerprints were formed by the unique current of the womb; therefore, your fingerprint belongs entirely to you. In fact, no two matching prints have been found in over 140 years of forensic fingerprinting. Even identical twins, who share the exact DNA, have unique fingerprints.
Every day we move through the world leaving invisible evidence, a residue of water and oils on the surfaces we touch. No one can replicate your physical touch. But beyond the physical world, your routine interactions leave a mark on the people you encounter.
Your influence isn’t generic; it is once in forever. How you listen, laugh, your history, and individual perspective all combine to engage a person in a way only you can.
Your fingerprint can remain on a surface for years. Likewise, an act of kindness, an instant of connection, or words of validation can remain in a person’s subconscious for decades. You may forget the conversation, but you may have said words that became a turning point for the person receiving them.
You become a page in their life story. And your life isn’t a solo project either; every person who connects with you writes in your story. Likewise, every person you interact with is a walking connection of the people who have touched them.
When you choose to comfort a patient, encourage a co-worker, or show kindness to a stranger, you become part of their story. Your interaction can change their day and, in turn, shape their week and even impact their life and identity.
You cannot move through life without leaving your unique mark. Your only choice is what imprint you want to leave behind.
